Steve West Responding to the amorphous chaos of the everyday, I see my work as landscapes of distilled thoughts, events and incidents; a series of paradoxes where rationality and chaos, affirmation and negation, ambiguity and understanding co-exist.

My recent work has developed through ideas from drawing and collage – the deconstruction and isolation of advertisements, scientific diagrams, sections, maps and acetates that, once fragmented, are then superimposed, reassembled and reconstructed – out of context – into a series of recoded and reinterpreted elements that emerge to exist within the boundaries of new relationships. These collages act as a basis for both content and form, and exist independently of the medium of execution; they could be developed as paintings – acrylic and aerosol - or through a variety of printmaking techniques.

Veneer, seduction, fragmentation through colony, swarm and outbreak, clutter, crowd, space and silence, primordial biologies, clusters, splinters, microscopy, flotsam, amorphous flittering temporal forms, clouds, vapour trails, the unlikely patternation of chaos, decorative gloss, isolated pools, fun, allure, irony, separation, danger, frivolity, infinity; contemporary chaos in a 70’s groove – a cool aesthetic perhaps married to the absurd.

Such disintegration of structure into component parts and standpoints describes a universe scrutinized into molecular anatomies, which in itself (paradoxically) implies a macro cosmology of universal infinity; a re-angled Sublime. Within an arena of contemplative abstraction and missing information, I aim to incorporate these multiple perspectives to create an equilibrium of fragments, possibilities, footnotes and digressions; a visual language for the logic of contradiction.
