Sarah Lüdemann

I am a very versatile artist who studied Fine art in Cologne, Germany and Oslo, Norway; my practice encompasses painting, photography, drawing, sculptural installation, video and performance.

The connection point between all my pieces of work is the concept of identity. Initially I started exploring my own ‘self’ through traditional self portraits. But soon I started investigating the notion of the self portrait in wider terms to find out where it starts and where it ends and whether it is expandable. I was looking at how to express the complexity of my own being; how to depict the multiple roles I play within different social structures, how to present the many layers of my personality. My living abroad and experiencing different cultures and languages, has triggered an even more intricate thought process about my own identity, culture, nostalgia and language and has raised questions about nationality, cultural diversity and change of identity through global mobility.
Within my recent practice I also started to look at other people’s identities and how they expand or contract within a changed context. I find it fascinating to explore how associations with certain contexts are connected to certain social constructs.

Exploring the artist’s occupation and the role of the artist, which is part of my identity, I developed ‘Art piece’, a piece of art which discusses the worth of art and to an extent the situation of the art market today. I wondered how the dichotomy ‘money-art’ influences my work as an artist. How does the value of my own work change within the context of the art world? What is my work and other artist’s work worth and why? How much have I entered the art world and how important is the context of the art world to my own art practice?
