Janice Ellis-Brown

My work explores the significance we often attribute to objects or ‘things’ and the way in which objects often evoke or trigger a past memory and also create identity. I interpret these symbolically and visually in my work often using ‘things’ I have collected or family heirlooms.

The body of work created for my degree project in 2006 ‘My Sewing Box’ a series of soft ground etchings, is central to my new work. Currently I am combining stitch and embroidery within printmaking methods to develop ideas. The work has several layers of symbolic meaning which include wishes, memories and the different pathways we can find ourselves on. These associations underpin personal themes of loss, identity and fragility.

As an artist printmaker, I work from my small home based studio using a variety of printmaking methods to produce unique or small editions of original prints
