James studied painting at the Accademia de Belle Arte in Florence and at Bath Academy of Art. From 1974–76 he was Artist in Residence at Felsted School. He has exhibited widely, including at Kettles Yard and the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge. As well as his art practice, he decorates interiors, specialising in paint effects and carpentry.
‘My inspiration comes from landscape and abstract art language. I want to evoke a sense of recognition, without being specific about the subject. We all respond to the visual in different ways, but there is a universal retinal pleasure in dense surfaces and deep colours.’
