Christian Kohl Born in Mexico I have developed a genuine interest in aesthetics and all art forms. Since the start attending lectures and working side by side with Mexican artists such as Francisco Toledo, Alejandro Colunga and Javier Arevalo my eye grew to distinguish original artistic expression. Henceforth I began my career as a gallerist, museographer and curator with the creation of an etching gallery. In collaboration with my father Helmut Kohl, whom with 30 years of experience as director of art schools in Germany, Kenya and Mexico, became my guide and teacher. At Guachabato Tlaquepaque, a gallery dedicated to promotion and art dealing, I developed skills of art evaluation, delicate print work handling, selection of framing, museography and curation. Here in association with a respectful graphic workshop that creates etching and other works of art for important Mexican artists is where I gained more knowledge and experience. Soon I met other curators such as Patrick Charpenel and Carlos Ashida and designed exhibitions for young and talented creators. After this, came a huge desire to grow and, having found a beautiful house from beginnings of century, I inaugurated an innovative art space in a very conservative city named Guadalajara. " Haus der Kunst, Puente del Arte Contemporaneo " (House of Art, Bridge of Contemporary Art) where in three imposing showrooms and two open patios, we show painting, sculpture, installation, video, photography, performance, theatre, music concerts, book launches, art courses, workshops, happenings and other forms of modern creation.

As project manager of the Haus I was responsible for finances, legal documentation and formalities as well as making decisions with regards to the design of the gallery. With the help of five members of staff under my direction and as part of the promotion I opened a coffee shop in the house's centre "Kaffee Haus" with the intention to bring people of all sorts into the art rooms and displays. First opening curiosity from sight and later, without forcing them, bringing them in to make very clear that art is nothing but life's most precious form of communication and a means of inspiration, necessary for all human kind. Today, seven years from the Haus's foundation we have presented 84 exhibitions, 12 museum collaborations, consecutive week-night concerts, coordinated a World Music Festival as well as cooperated with government scholarship displays. Negotiating with collectors, foundations, public institutions, artists and personal investment, this art space keeps working for art and receives approximately 1 to 3 thousand visitors every month.

Articles and sites about my work up to now can be found in Artvance magazine #.1 published July 99. Participation in an international gallery art fair, Muestra 001, Monterrey, Mexico, can be seen in www.muestra.com.mx - Galeria Haus der Kunst. Curation notes from RECO 7 ( movement created for the promotion of Mexican modern art ) are found in the articles written by Spanish critic Ramon Almela with the title " Opuestas Curadurias Bajo el Mismo Techo " at www.criticarte.com , under "archivo". In this, their first exhibition together, I curated the work of artists Alicia Ceballos, Paula Santiago, Davis R. Birks, Rodrigo Medina, Francisco Morales, Tomas Lopez Rocha and Carlos Vargas Pons in Puebla's Modern Art Museum, Mexico with the help of the Secretary of Culture. The next presentations of RECO 7 “Vibra Optica” run through Europe, starting in the citys of Graz and Vienna, Austria, later at the National Museum of Bucharest, Rumania, Mestna Galerija, Ljubljiana, Eslovenia, then in the Kritiku Gallery in Prague, Czech Republic later to be presented through Mexican embassies in 7 other countries in collaboration with Helmut Kˆhl and other European Entities.

Now living in England, I spent two years in Plymouth, where I’ve had brief collaborations with Plymouth’s Arts Center, making projects with local artists such as Jojo Moreski, photographer and Cultural TV presenter.
Then moved to Cambridge, where I worked for a year at The Lawson Gallery in front of King’s College and after opened TheUpper Gallery At Home Affairs, a new gallery above a beautiful Georgian house, where a monthly exhibition of local artists is presented. Now a founder member of CAMBA, Cambridge Art, I hope to focus my skills in promoting up and coming artists and keep curating art exhibitions,, where ever it’s required.
