Andrew Hladky

In my paintings travel brochure imagery mingles with art history to form alien worlds of repeated sunsets and multiple horizons. Constructed using cocktail sticks to apply neat oil paint in repetitive gestures, the images build out from the support a long way, becoming very three dimensional. The effect is like an organic form of pointillism, as if the paint has grown out of the surface before fossilising. My subject-matter is memory over-run by the impersonal; sentiment and nostalgia overgrown by blank, repetitive process. Worms of paint squeezed straight from the tube populate the paintings, becoming a part of the image even as they threaten to overrun it.
